The weight of tragedy and the complexities of justice collide in the case of Matthew de Grood, the Calgary man found not criminally responsible for the devastating house party stabbings that claimed five lives. This case continues to unfold, raising difficult questions about rehabilitation, freedom, and the enduring pain of the victims' families.
De Grood's treatment team, led by psychiatrist Dr. Sergio Santana, is now advocating for increased freedoms for him. They believe he poses a low risk of reoffending and is ready for relaxed rules, including the possibility of visiting his sister in British Columbia and living with his parents to assist with his father's care and provide financial relief.
This recommendation was presented at an annual hearing before Alberta’s Criminal Code Review Board, which will ultimately decide whether to grant these additional freedoms. Dr. Santana emphasized that the treatment team can only recommend, leaving the final decision to the board. He also noted that they had previously recommended more privileges for de Grood last year.
The proposed relaxed rules include the ability to travel to Western Canada or Ontario for up to two weeks at a time and the possibility of residing with his parents. The court heard that de Grood has faced housing challenges since his last review, with his lease being terminated after his landlord discovered his identity. Furthermore, he has been unsuccessful in securing work placements or part-time employment.
Dr. Santana highlighted that de Grood continues to grapple with PTSD and the impact his actions have had on his own family and the families of his victims. He emphasized that the feelings of guilt, shame, and remorse that de Grood experiences are positive indicators for his recovery.
But here's where it gets controversial... The families of the victims provided statements, sharing their ongoing grief and the lasting impact of the tragedy. Gregg Parras, father of Kaiti Parras, expressed the emotional toll of these annual hearings, stating the uncertainty surrounding de Grood's medical and living situations creates ongoing anxiety. Patty Segura, mother of Jordan Segura, shared her exhaustion with writing victim impact statements, feeling that her words are often redacted.
Parras expressed relief that the treatment team did not recommend a conditional discharge, a position also opposed by the Crown. He explained that this means de Grood will remain under supervision, and if his condition deteriorates, he can be returned to care without his consent.
De Grood's team has been persistently seeking greater freedoms. The Alberta Court of Appeal rejected their previous attempts for a conditional discharge or relaxed supervision rules in September.
De Grood was found not criminally responsible for the 2014 murders due to his mental state at the time. The families of the victims worry that the justice system will forget their children and the futures they were denied. Parras poignantly reflected on the life Kaiti missed, while Segura remembered Jordan's dedication to his education and his kind nature.
In the early hours of April 15, 2014, during a relaxed house party, de Grood, then 22, attacked Zackariah Rathwell, Jordan Segura, Kaiti Perras, Josh Hunter, and Lawrence Hong with a knife, before fleeing the scene.
And this is the part most people miss... The trial revealed that de Grood, suffering from schizophrenia, believed he was attacking mythological creatures. The Appeal Court's decision confirmed that he experienced a psychotic episode and was unaware that his actions were morally wrong.
The hearing concluded late Wednesday afternoon, and the Criminal Code Review Board will issue a written decision soon.
