And this is the part most people miss: the suspects' next move was to scale a fence and scaffolding to access the roof of the Goldenson Building. It was here, inside a wooden locker, that the large commercial firework detonated, triggering a fire alarm at 2:45 a.m. in the Department of Neurobiology.
Ted Docks, the special agent in charge of the FBI in Boston, emphasized the potential severity of the situation. "This explosive device had the potential to cause significant injury to anyone nearby... only by sheer luck and the rapid response of first responders were lives spared and injuries averted."
The suspects' movements after the explosion were also carefully tracked. Surveillance video captured them visiting the fifth floor before splitting up and fleeing in opposite directions. Cardoza was later seen removing his pants and discarding them in a garbage bin, while Patterson returned to the nearby Wentworth campus, charging his phone.
