Director Dan Trachtenberg, who helmed Predator: Badlands, actually gave a special shout-out to James Cameron in the credits. It turns out that Cameron's involvement began with an invitation. Trachtenberg was already in New Zealand for pre-production, and Cameron, who knew some of the same collaborators, offered him a visit. Who could refuse that?
Trachtenberg shared that he and Cameron had previously connected because of their shared collaborators at 20th Century. Cameron had enjoyed Prey, which led to them staying in touch. When Trachtenberg was in New Zealand, Cameron invited him to his Wellington studio. Trachtenberg spent time on set and in the edit bay of Avatar: Fire and Ash, where he shared his vision for Badlands, describing the film's unique approach to the franchise and to his own filmmaking style.
After their time together, they went to dinner separately. Cameron's initial thoughts were very encouraging. As Trachtenberg recalls, Cameron said, "I was just thinking about what you’re doing, and I think it’s going to work." This early support provided a huge boost, inspiring Trachtenberg and his crew.
But here's where it gets controversial... Cameron later confessed that he hadn't expected Trachtenberg to pull it off! Trachtenberg revealed that Cameron admitted, "I have to be honest with you. When I first heard what you were doing, I did not think it was going to work. But holy crap, you pulled it off." This revelation highlights Cameron's ability to provide the right encouragement at the right time. Trachtenberg made sure to include a special thanks in the credits.
Predator: Badlands is set in a future on a remote planet. The story follows Dek, a young Predator outcast, who forms an unexpected alliance with Thia. Together, they embark on a dangerous quest to find the ultimate adversary.
And this is the part most people miss... The film has received largely positive reviews. However, some critics, like Chris Bumbray, have noted that the PG-13 rating feels out of place compared to earlier Predator movies. Bumbray suggested that the film is aimed at a younger audience, pointing to the inclusion of a cute sidekick animal. While the film is well-executed for its rating, it may not resonate as strongly with older fans of the franchise.
